Insights for transferring careers between Government, Corporate and Not-For–Profit Sectors
I have just read an article in the latest Harvard Business Review about business leaders who are ‘tri-sector leaders’ with career enhancing roles across multiple sectors. Suggestion is that that experience in more than one sector helps develop an individual and their leadership performance by being able to bring different insights and experiences to bear.
I have noticed that in NSW Government an increasing number of multi sector leaders now working in senior Government roles. Makes sense on many levels but I suggest there are challenges in making such a move, irrespective of direction. For example, sectoral cultural differences operating, networks that need to be rapidly developed in the new sector, choosing the right timing (early, mid or late career?).
In my case I transferred mid-career from the public to the corporate sector in the late 1990s. I remember being told that I would be even more valuable second job ‘out’ once the rough edges had been knocked off me in the first job. I think that was meant to be encouragement!
What insights or perspectives would you give to someone changing sectors? Or advice you have been given?
